Clacton on Sea

The original 24 hardy souls attending Clacton was whittled down to 22 after the Covid virus struck again. I hope our new Hon Treas’ Steve Barker is feeling ok. We also hope Gill is feeling a bit better. Gill has been testing negative after he caught Covid but was still feeling the effects. We hope to see you both at Thetford.

Clacton never fails to provide great value for money. A decent portion of fish and chips before we played was followed by a generous portion of Roast beef when we had finished. As usual this was served by the delightful waitresses that Clacton are known for and probably is the most important reason for Malc’s attendance.

We travelled to the course with some trepidation with dire forecasts of heavy snow showers. Indeed as we were midway between Colchester and Clacton a heavy snow shower made us think a card school was more likely than golf!

When we teed off, however, it was quite a pleasant day and after a few holes the sun was out the wind dropped and the various levels of clothes we were wearing were being dispensed with but that didn’t last too long and they soon went back on. The course was in excellent condition and although pick and place was in place there was such little mud it really wasn’t needed.

Hail adorns the Clacton on Sea greens

The early starters missed the worst of the weather and as our group on the fifteenth we were subject to a heavy hail storm that covered the green in seconds. The wind was so strong that the trolley being used by my guest toppled over and launched his iPhone into the creek running alongside the fairway. He has had to buy a new one making it a very expensive day!

The scores were very varied with some coping better than others on the day. Well played David George with an admirable 38 points winning by a clear margin. Bad luck to Malc but he did enjoy the scenery!

All in all another enjoyable GOATS outing and I look forward to seeing everyone at Thetford
