The Oxfordshire

The Captain’s weekend is a highlight of the GOATS year and 2011 saw us descend upon The Oxfordshire. Having hosted the Trilby tour the previous Friday the course was in great shape and the greens rolling true. The weather, previously a problem at Hanbury Manor, was also perfect over both days and despite the alcohol there were some great scores.

Sunday saw John Whitehead rip the course up with 41 points with Keith Otter and Terry Jones second and third on 40 points. For the guests Steve Plyer scored an astonishing 40 points of a handicap of 3, four points ahead of Del Flanagan and six ahead of Keith Cheek.

Our evening saw an enjoyable meal and a lengthy session where we learned amongst other things that Arsene will start the season in charge of Paris St Germain, how to make a phone call whilst exercising and how to use pornography during a business presentation!

I wish he'd lose that bloody Dunlop - still suppose its good for the team......

Monday saw a 25 point deficit to overcome for the Captain and an additional team competition to add some extra spice to the proceedings. Headgear was the order of the day and after 6 holes “Maserati” Hunt produced the particularly battered specimen in the picture from his bag. Whether it was the heat or the battered Dunlop that came out of an opponents bag (after a first ball disappeared into water at the fifth) and scored 20 points including two birdies before ending in the water at 13 only Mazza could say but he kept repeating under his breath “think of the team!”

The points deficit for the Captain’s team could not be overcome but the team event produced some good scores with Mike Battle’s personal 45 points securing both a personal win with a 6 point gap over team mate Tony Evans, who scored 23 on the final 9 holes, and a team win by 4 points.
